As much as it is hard to invest time into watching my posts I thought this particular one hits home to the heart. The E:60 on ESPN video deals with NBA star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway and lifelong friend Desmond Merriweather. Is well-known that Mr. Hardaway is a well respected NBA player for 16 seasons. Mr. Merriweather also played basketball and this was why the two gentlemen became friends when Mr. Merriweather was seven and Penny was 10 years old. The two young boys would meet every night in Binghampton, Tennessee to play basketball.
As time passes, Mr. Merriweather was diagnosed with stage IV terminal colon cancer. Merriweather was later put into a drug-induced coma for two days but soon awoke. He wrote on a napkin, “1 cent,” meaning that his family should call Mr. Hardaway to help coach his basketball team while in the hospital. As much as Desmond was battling with cancer he told Penny take care my boys. When interviewed by an ESPN reporter, “why do you do this (e.g., coach and chemotherapy)?” Merriweather replies, “It is for the kids.” The ESPN reporter then follows with, “I mean it is taking so much out of you.” He replies, “But it is also putting so much in me.”
My take away message from this video is that life has its ups and downs and a person has to be resilient and find purpose or meaning in his or her life. To see his players go to two state championships gave Merriweather a sense of peace and happiness in a battle that would take his life on February 8, 2015.
