What is beauty?
One of the most captivating questions I had the honor of answering on my website is what is considered beautiful? The idea of beauty has varied throughout time, different cultures, and ever changing perceptions of the world. Beauty has been represented and depicted through pictures, movies, and concepts that forcefully seep into our consciousness. Beauty has been defined in so many ways. Beauty is an ambiguous subject. I have discovered that beauty is simply happiness. Happiness that is shared with another person, animal, or activity.
It is the images, moments, and feelings that inspire the most distinct and remarkable behaviors of us all. Those are the times we feel free and the most alive. It is those moments we feel proud and eminent. It seems like that element should be innate in oneself, but it is not. We must strive everyday to feel beauty.
Beauty is often distorted, misunderstood, and shadowed by a wide amount of conflicting ideas or pressures. It is something most individuals try to achieve with plastic surgery, rather than see the true essence of the happiest moments. It feels like everyone is trying to be something they are not or working towards the impossible.
I have been most happy usually when I am not following any guidelines from common beauty standards or pop culture. The beauty standards is a social constructed notion that physical attractiveness is a benchmark. It was not those nights where I was avoided or forgotten by individuals I know, it is not those moments when I feel so alone, and is definitely not those moments where I try reaching out to someone and do not get a reply. I think this is the case when certain persons are disgusting. It has been the moments I feel true happiness, which was not derived from my appearance, at all.
I love the beauty that would pulsate through my body when I am in connection with someone. I love the beauty of how I feel on my bicycle. For once I am not figuratively limited to my disability. I can be free for that short duration of time. I love the beauty of my sweaty body after an intense workout. These are the times when I feel most beautiful because I am alive, not because of an exterior image that society has brainwashed others around to believe.
It is those sensations that ignite the real flame of confidence and beauty in the souls of those consistently bombarded with messages telling them to believe otherwise. It is those little moments, like when someone looks at you with respect and admiration, not in sympathy or curiosity. It is the true ecstasy of falling in love with people and places in a beautiful way. It is the way it feels to achieve a goal you have worked countless hours to achieve. Beauty is the wrinkles from every effortless smile and furrowed brow to experience negative emotions. It is the moments that we strive to be. Beauty is all the times I have opened someone’s eyes to another perspective. The perspective could be on life, love, and happiness. Beauty is in the heart, and the way it shines through all the darkness.
We are all unique; with experiences and memories that tie one another together seamlessly into a tightly woven blanket of our own burdens of beauty. We are different shapes, sizes, colors, and heritages. We are men and women. We are activists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and inspirators. We are the lives and change we create in this world, and that is beauty.
Our bodies are simply a vessel that allows us to emit these experiences and accomplishments. These things are examples that display our happiness and most incredible experiences for the world to share with us. Those are the exact moments we draw our strength, compassion, and are engulfed with the remarkable euphoric experiences of being alive. No culture, company, or concept could ever define beauty. No person should ever tell you how to define beauty and if he or she does then he or she is be labeled shallow. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
